IFC and Lionsgate adapting the Anita Blake vampire books for TV April 2nd, 2009 In light of the popularity of Charlaine Harris’s vampire books being adapted to TV by Alan Ball for HBO as True Blood- Lionsgate and After Dark films and IFC have announced in Variety that they are working on bringing Laurell K Hamilton’s uber popular Anita Blake vampire hunter books to the small screen. Glen Morgan “The X-Files” wrote the adaptation and will exec produce the film, which begins production this summer. Courtney Solomon will exec produce along with Morgan. Hamilton, Jonathan D. Green and Stephanie Caleb are co-exec producers. The initial project will be a tv movie focused on the character of Anita. My guess is that it will be an origins type story. For those of you not familiar to the Anita Blake books- Anita is a zombie raiser who brings people back from the dead to help solve crimes and is recruited to become a vampire killer in a time when vampires have been given civil rights so what she does has to be somewhat secret. She works in this world of darkness and shadows and dabbles in all kinds of strange things supernatural. The books are super popular- personally I love the graphic novel adaptations of her work. One thing that confuses me- in the other media reports they focus on the fact the IFC’s audience is primarily men- the Anita Blake books have a massive FEMALE cult following. I hope that when it comes to casting and adapting the source material they realize this. Alan Ball has understood this very well and his adaptations of the Charlaine Harris books have managed to bring men into the fandom while not alienated the core female fans. On the heels of this- the other series of books I really want to see adapted to film or television are the Kim Harrison books. They are FUNNY as heck with a total AU sci-fi twist on the typical supernatural horror genre. Kim’s heroine Rachel Morgan is a witch with a twist , the books are funny and a bit mad cap more than scary. Lots of sex and sexual overtones- her vampire roommate wants to be her lover and Rachel just can’t go gay though they dance around things over and over again.
